A Jewish Family Saga — A WWII-Era Family Saga

One Jewish family, split across two continents — hunted in America, then hunted in Europe.

It begins with a blood libel in a small New York town in 1928 and follows the Schatzman family across four decades and an ocean — through Weimar Berlin, Mussolini’s Italy, and the rise of the Third Reich. Four books, one family, and every enemy the century could throw at them.

Four books. One family saga, from the New World to the old one’s darkest hour.

The story

In 1928, a little girl goes missing in a small upstate New York town, and an ancient poison rises with her: the blood libel. The town turns on the Schatzmans, and a family that came to America for safety learns there is nowhere the hatred cannot follow.

From there the saga widens — to the artists and excess of Weimar Berlin, to Mussolini’s Italy, to a Manhattan of bootleggers and old enemies, and at last to a Germany where staying has become a death sentence. Across four books the Schatzman and Birnbaum families are tested by prejudice, ambition, love, and the gathering war. Read in order, start to finish.

When The Dust Settled

The world races toward war and the Schatzmans are divided. In New York, prohibition has ended and Sam’s livelihood running liquor for the Jewish mob collapses — the new jobs on offer cross lines he swore he never would. Across the ocean, Mussolini rules Italy with an iron fist, and those who speak against him vanish. The family’s two worlds are drifting toward the same storm.
